North Devon is a great place for a motorhome holiday and having your own home away from home means you can relax, save money and beat the Devon drizzle when it inevitably descends. There are some excellent touring parks and sites along this part of the coast, with the plum sites offering enviable views of the sea and a couple even boasting footpaths directly down to the sea.

The best beaches are right on your door step so head to Woolacombe for watersports, Barricane, Combesgate, Rockham and Grunta for delving into rock pools, Croyde and Saunton for a spot of surfing or body boarding, sand castles and kite flying and for a great pub lunch seek out the Chichester Arms in Morthoe.

Beaches and bays further afield that are worthy of a visit include the gorgeous shingle beach at Woody Bay where you wend your way through dappled woodland towards the beach – in May the ground is carpeted with bluebells – and the pretty village of Lee nestled in the Fuschia valley, the beach here has sand and rock pools but is only accessible at low tide so be sure to check tide times.

The unashamedly quaint and steeply sloped coastal village of Clovelly makes a lovely traffic free day out, but be warned it does get packed in summer months so try to get there early in the day. Lynmouth Bay is a stunning village sitting on the mouth of the River Lyn with an excellent museum, a cliff railway linking Lynmouth to Lynton, a brass rubbing centre and lovely woodland walks by the waterfalls in Glen Lyn Gorge.

North Devon also has some gorgeous gardens, not least Rosemoor RHS garden near Torrington with its abundance of rare and indigenous specimens and special events and talks throughout the year. Also nearby in Torrington is Dartington Crystal where you can try your hand at glass blowing, hand casting a keepsake, or decorating your own piece of Dartington Crystal to take away.

For a peek at some costumed finery National trust run Killerton House is a must see. Marvel at the tiny waists and frills in the costume collection and if the weather’s good take a stroll round the grounds.

For a more active day simply head to any part of the North Devon coast and pick up the South West Coastal Path. The highest point is at Great Hangman in North Devon where the cliffs rise 320 m (1043 ft) above the sea with breathtaking views of Exmoor, the Welsh coast and Lundy. If you have a National Trust membership card then look out for National trust owned car parks along the cliffs as you will be able to park for free – a blessing in the summer months.

If two wheels is more your bent then hire some bikes and head out on the Tarka Trail, an easy 30 mile cycle path from Braunton to Meeth that cuts through some of Devon’s loveliest countryside, villages and towns with plenty of good watering holes on the way.

Exmoor & Dartmoor

If you fancy seeing some dramatic moorland then Devon has not one but two stunning national parks in Exmoor and Dartmoor. Exmoor is the closest of the two parks as it is right on the north coast and is a place of tranquillity and wilderness. You can spot red deer and the endearing Exmoor ponies running wild across the moorland as it stretches to the rugged coastline. There are plenty of activities to get involved in including walking, cycling, canoeing, horse riding, fishing and rock climbing.

Beautiful Dartmoor National Park. Photo credit Jonathan Camp

Dartmoor is the larger of the two National Parks and is just under an hour away from the North Devon coast. Undoubted highlights are Castle Drogo, Becky Falls, stumbling across ancient sites and mediaeval abbeys, canoeing on the River Dart, and of course the dramatic scenery topped by craggy stone tors. Also worth a visit are Buckfastleigh Abbey where you can walk in the footsteps of ancient monks and the old pub at

And remember for top tips on where to go and what to see ask the local staff at your Devon holiday park as they are bound to have some favourite secret spots and activities that they might just share with you.
This is a guest blog post from our friends as Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks, who offer friendly camping and touring sites in North Devon.

So you’ve decided to bite the bullet and buy your very own home on the road, but there are still plenty of decisions to be made, not least whether you go for a caravan or a motorhome, after all purchasing a caravan is like shopping for a car and a home all in one. We’ve put together some basic advice for novices to help you on your way to making the right choice for you.

As when you buy a house or a car, sit down and make a sensible wish list of all the practical elements you want out of your new home away from home. You need to look at the mechanical capabilities of the vehicle but you also need to consider the internal and external features, its overall practicality and liveability.

It’s important to consider your budget, how often you will use it, what type of environment you will be travelling in, how far afield you will be going and what, and how many people, you will be using it for. Other things to consider are dining area location, the work surfaces and sufficient headroom. Storage space is also a crucial requirement as you don’t want to be sitting amongst piles of clothes and pots and pans for your entire trip.

There are many options when it comes to choosing a caravan or motor-home. Ultimately it is a matter of finding the unit that suits you, your travel plans, your budget and the kind of lifestyle you wish to enjoy while traveling.

Caravans

Caravans come in all shapes, sizes and designs. Most people will find that something less than 6-7m in length is more than adequate, anything larger and you’ll be struggling on smaller roads and you’ll need a powerful 4×4 to tow it. The larger the caravan the more drag there will be and the more fuel you will use so think carefully about your car to caravan power to weight ratio. For larger caravans and trailers you may need to take an additional test so always check the categories on your driving licence.

Caravans provide a good level of comfort and many are well appointed with appliances just like home. In a caravan beds can stay made up, fridges can be filled up, everyday utensils are readily available and clothing can be stashed away in wardrobes and drawers. Many caravans have showers, air-conditioning and heating and most are fitted with annexes or awnings to provide outdoor living areas. High end caravans also boast some high-tech gadgetry so if you can’t live without email, TV, computer games and Skype then you’ll be well catered for these days.

There are numerous options in terms of door position, sleeping capacity and a choice between on and off-road models. You will also want to consider the number of axles (single, double/tandem and even triple). Generally a single axle will have more manoeuvrability, be lighter to tow and therefore more economical on fuel but can sway (without a sway control device) and pitch whereas a double or tandem axle will be far less manoeuvrable and more costly, it will however a give a straighter tow, more stability and less bounce.

You can also get pop-top caravans, which are just like normal caravans, except the top section folds up and down. This makes them easier to tow as the lower profile means far less drag therefore using less fuel. They do lack overhead cupboard space though and require slightly more maintenance.

The beauty of a caravan in general is that can leave it in place once you find your pitch and then explore the locality with just your car, making it much easier if you are holidaying in an area that has narrow or twisty roads. It also means that if one of you wants to head out for the day but the other wants to hang out at the campsite you can both get your own way and stay happy.

Campervans and Motorhomes

People buy campervans or motorhomes for the convenience of not having to tow, and for the high degree of independence and freedom they allow – you can turn the key in the ignition and drive off to a beautiful spot, have a beer or a glass of wine and then bed in for the night without worrying about driving anywhere else.

A campervan is generally much smaller than a motorhome and sizes range from small models suitable for couples through to larger units with good facilities including, in some cases, a shower and toilet. However headroom is often at a premium so you may spend most of your time stooping, unless you find one with a pop-top roof. You’ll also have to keep packing the beds away and keep the place really tidy as storage and space will also be at a minimum. Their main advantage is that they are easy to drive and often double as the day-to-day car so you don’t have to have an extra vehicle to do your everyday driving. They are economically sound for people on a tight budget who don’t mind being cosy!

All in one motorhomes offer all the advantages of a caravan in terms of comfort and facilities. They are generally much bigger than campervans and are nearly always constructed on a small truck base. They range in size from 5 m to 12 m including the driving cab. Smaller motorhomes can be driven on a normal car license but larger units, some of which are spectacularly appointed with luxury fittings, require a different category license so this is a really important point to bear in mind when thinking about what you are going to buy.

Motorhomes can be difficult to park (particularly the larger vehicles), and they restrict mobility as every time you want to use your vehicle, you have to dismantle your campsite. With larger motorhomes however, you could overcome this problem by towing a small car (often a Smart car) or you could take the active route and rack your bicycles to the back.

Making a decision

A caravan or motorhome will be a large financial commitment so it’s important to make sure that your choice is exactly what you require. Take time to make a decision and do your research, don’t just go for looks or make a snap decision on eBay. Always go and see the vehicle before making a firm offer and it’s also a good idea to visit some dealerships to glean as much information and knowledge as possible before making your final decision.

To help you along Vicarious Books publishes a really good series of guides for motorhome and caravan novices, including “Go Motorhoming” and “The Caravan Handbook”, plus a series of campsite guides for the UK and Europe.

This is a guest blog post from Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks, who offer camping holidays and caravan touring sites in Devon.

This website uses Google Mappress to show locations of sites in each county of England, Wales, Scotland and will be developed to show sites in Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal.

This website is being developed to give detailed locations of all known Campsites and Caravan parks. Campers and owners of Campervans, Motorhomes and Touring Caravans will be able to view these site locations on the Google Mapress maps. These maps give a satellite, terrain or hybrid view.

The objective of this website is to provide the viewer with the ability to find a suitable location they want to visit by listing locations by county and by markers on a map. Details of that locations name, address, telephone number and website address are listed in alphabetical order.

The map can be viewed as a satellite or terrain image. This allows the viewer to magnify the map in satellite view to actually see the campsite or caravan park as a satellite picture. This allows the viewer to see its location within the county and surrounding countryside.

Between the satellite and terrain view the website visitor will be able to see the type of terrain the location is located on. Also from the map the viewer can get detailed directions to the location from their home or current location.

Are you the owner of a Campervan, Caravan or Motorhome? Where do you store it when you are not using it? How secure is the storage facility? Are you concerned about the security of your mobile holiday home?

All of us that own a Campervan, Caravan or Motorhome have to leave our mobile holiday home unattended for short periods of time during the holiday season and for longer periods during the winter months. Most of us have to leave our valuable mobile holiday home at a remote storage facility when we are not using it. Some of the storage facilities are farms or industrial units with dedicated areas for storing Campervans, Touring Caravans and Motorhomes. Others are campsites and caravan parks with winter storage areas.

Although these places do their best to secure their sites from intruders, thefts still occur. The lost of a mobile holiday home is extremely tramatising even if it is recovered quickly. There are some very good alarm, and immobiliser systems on the market and there is the tracker option. The ‘professional’ thieves find ways around alarms and immobilisers or leave a campervan ,caravan or motorhome they have stolen somewhere for a period to see if it is found by the police. If it is not found within 24 hours then it was not fitted with a tracking device.

With all of these security devices we never seem to identify the thief or catch them in the act of stealing. Which means we may have detered a theft or recovered our stolen holiday home but the thief is still at large to steal again. Pictures or video of a person caught in the act of commiting a crime is always successful at obtaining a conviction in court. That is why CCTV is so extensively used at fixed locations throughout the UK.

Now there is a solid state CCTV security device that can be used in mobile property like your campervan, caravan or motorhome. Video Domain Technologies have developed a new CCTV security unit called ‘DV800 Cop’ that is ideal for Campervans, Touring Caravans and Motorhomes. This security product was developed as a covert CCTV unit and is no bigger that your hand. Not only does it act like a CCTV unit but it also acts as an alarm. This is how it works:

DV800-Cop is a free standing, miniature Digital Video Recorder with Video Motion Detection and integrated SIM card which gives Mobile Communication that transmits SMS messages to alert of intruder and emails with still picture images for remote Visual Verification. The unit records actual video sequences.

The SIM card mobile communication enables the DV800-Cop unit to send messages to your mobile phone and/or e-mail with JPEG images attached every time an intrusion is detected, so that you can see what is happening at the remote location, inside your campervan, caravan or motorhome and take the necessary action.

DV800-COP is a solid-state plug & play device with no moving parts that can be installed quickly and easily, and can be moved around effortlessly between your mobile holiday home and your normal home. It is easy to operate as a CCTV unit and as an alarm. Alarms can be activated by external triggers and/or by advanced, integrated Video Motion Detection (VMD), which enables the user to define specific areas of interest within the picture frame.

The DV800-COP has been designed so that it can remain unattended for long periods without the need for regular attendance. Its miniature size makes it easy to hide in a mobile holiday home and easy to relocate to your normal home to protect it while you are away in your mobile holiday home. A truly dual purpose security system.

Not only is this unit a mini CCTV system but there are a number of alarm inputs and outputs that can add additional security to your mobile holiday home. For example door sensors or PIR’s can be connected to the unit which would trigger the unit to send you a SMS text message to your mobile phone if movement was sensed or a door or window was opened. Output triggers could be connected to turn lights on or set off an audible alarm, etc. And at the same time an email would be sent to your computer or mobile phone with images of the intruder.

So even if the intruder stole your mobile home you would have visual evidence of the intruder on your home computer or mobile phone. More importantly the second an intruder entered your campervan, caravan or motorhome you would immediately be made aware of it no matter where you were. You then have the opportunity to take action to call the police and or site owners.

Alarms can be activated by external triggers and or by advanced, integrated Video Motion Detection (VMD), which enables you to define specific areas of interest within the picture frame. It automatically record events on a mini SD card up to 4GB memory.

Recorded images are easily analyzed at a later date by simply removing the mini SD card from the unit and inserting it into a memory card reader connected to a PC or Laptop.

The remote control supplied with the unit enables the user to Arm or Disarm the unit, set up the recording process or record events manually. It can also function as a panic button. It is supplied with an infrared remote control with panic button function, power supply (15ft cable) and mini SD card. Any CCTV Camera can be attached to the unit, the unit has a Unique sleep mode, so that it powers down to just 10mA

There is enough power available to keep it waiting for an external trigger, when it is received, it will power up, a 12V DC output is available on the unit that will power the associated CCTV camera attached to it. A series of images will be taken and even VMD can take over to continue a series of recorded events. Once all activity has ceased, then the unit automatically returns to sleep mode and also powers down the associated camera.

Evidence recording has never been so easy!

I would imagine that when you are out in your Campervan, Motorhome or Caravan you enjoy the outdoor life but when you have a chance to sit and relax you probably like to read a book or two. Forget the TV sit outside and enjoy the fresh air while reading a good book.

Save the forests buy a Kindle

Although I like the feel of a book I sometimes found that it was difficult to hold and keep open. Also I found that with storage being tight in my mobile home I was limited to a small selection of books I could take with me on my travels. Well you might like to know I have solved those problems with my purchase of a Kindle eBook reader.

Some of you will have already bought a Kindle and some eBooks and will understand my enthusiasum for my new purchase. Most of the new technology of today goes way over the heads of most people my age. But the Kindle has all the technology with the simplicity of a book.

At first I thought that putting this article together for a Camping and Caravaning website about a electronic book reader was out of place, but then I decided it was ideal place to put this article. When I am camping and caravaning the last thing I want to do is look at or work on my computer but I do enjoy reading a book.

Being a bit of an environmentalist I have often wondered how many forests we demolish to satisfy our book reading desires. When computers first came on the world stage many talked about the paperless office and home, but that has never happened. I do now believe that now we have ereaders like the Kindle we will see a reduction in the amount of books produced.

Up until this year electronic book readers were regarded as gadjets for geeks and techies. With the launch of the latest Kindle ereader from Amazon I feel the tide will change and book readers of all ages will buy a Kindle to read their favorite books, magazines, papers etc. Kindle ereaders are as thin as a pencil, are very light to hold, fit in the palm of your hand, although not quite pocket size but can hold upto 3,500 books.

With that level of book storage you will never be short of something to read on those loverly sunny evening or even when it is pouring down with rain and you are stuck in your caravan or motorhome. The Kindle comes in two versions the Wi-Fi Kindle at £109.00 and the 3G Wi-Fi Kindle at £149.00.

The difference between the two is that the Wi-Fi Kindle can be loaded with eBooks by your home wireless router or via a USB connection to your PC or laptop. You can also connect via a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The 3G Wi-Fi Kindle does the same but will also connect to Amazon over a 3G network the same as your mobile phone. Which means that when you are away from home, possibly touring in your campervan or motorhome, you can still download eBooks to your Kindle in a matter of seconds.

So if you like reading books check out this short YouTube video about the Kindle. The best place to buy a Kindle is from Amazon who are the best and most well known online book seller.

The only down side to buying eBooks is they are only slightly cheaper than the hard copy books. You would expect that they would be some what cheaper. There is no production costs, storage costs or deliver charges. But unlike traditional books, that do not attract VAT, eBooks do. So there is a 17.5% saving we miss out on.

Another factor is the major publishers in the US have got together to ensure ebooks are not sold too cheaply. Which means the likes of Amazon cannot discount eBooks. With that said there is some compensation in that there are thousands of eBooks you can download free of charge and totally legally.

An organisation called Project Gutenburg are digitising thousands of out of print books with the help of thousands of volunteers. These books copyright has expired in the US which allows them to be re-printed as hard copies or eBooks and be sold or given away free of charge. Be warned though, copyright laws may be different in other countries outside the US.

Another website that also lists these free eBooks is FreeKindleBooks.org. They seem to offer a way to download a catalogue list of all Gutenburgs free eBooks to your Kindle or other type of ebook reader. Although these eBooks will not be current releases there are bound to be hundred of titles you have not read but always wanted to read but did not want to buy.

Amazon also lists thousands of these free books which you can download. There are many benefits in using Amazon to download your free and paid for eBooks. Amazon will keep an account and log of all the eBooks you download and if your Kindle is lost or stolen Amazon will redownload your books to a new Kindle and you can stop your Amazon account from being accessed. Save the forests buy a Kindle

Are you a Campsite or Caravan Park owner? Do you know someone who is? Tell them they can advertise the site free of charge on Yell.com by uploading a video.

In mid 2009 Yell.com in the UK stated they were launching a video section on their website. Originally they were offering to produce a business video for any local company. Or a business could upload their own video and there would be a charge to host the business video. It seems at present Yell.com is not going to charge to host videos.

Now launched, here in the UK, Yell.com has added a section to their website to allow businesses to upload a business video. It seem relatively new as at the time of writing this article there are only about 3000 businesses listed for London of which most are part of a tour Yell has made at some time prior to launch to add some videos.

Checking most counties around the UK found very few videos of local businesses. Which makes it a very good time to grab a listing at present as listings of your own business video is free of charge.

Yell.com does offer to produce a video for you using one of their, out sourced, video production companies. Or you can produce your own business video using a domestic camcorder. Alternatively you can find a video production company yourself and pay them to produce your business video.

The process of uploading video is very similar to uploading to YouTube. The main different is that your video must be a business video. From personal trials of uploading business videos it takes at present about four days to see a business video appear in any search on Yell.com. The assumption is that each business video is checked manually to ensure the video is of a business nature.

For those that are considering producing a business video there are a number of guild lines to follow. First it must be a business video as the upload process requires business details. Secondly the video should be relatively short and a video between 30 seconds to 2 minutes should get your message across. Third the video represents your business and should look professional and a high definition video will help in that respect.

A final tip when a business video is uploaded is, to add the full website address at the beginning of the description http://www.yourdomain . When the business video is listed by Yell.com the website address is an active link in the title of the video as well as a ‘visit website’ link. This would normally be a paid for extra in the normal listings.

The aim of the website is to have videos of campsites and caravan parks for campervan, caravan and motorhome owners to view prior to booking a stay.

Having owned a touring caravan and hired motorhomes it is an advantage to know what a site is like before your visit. Although you can see photos of sites on other websites and owner websites but these photos are limited in what they show of a site.

I launched the website at the end of April 2010 and added the first video of a caravan park called Billing Aquadrome. Below is a recent search on Google for ‘campervans billing’. It shows a page one ranking for my new website at positions one and two.

Also it shows a page one listing for the video I produced, uploaded to YouTube and embedded into the website. See image above. The video is ranked independently of a website. Google treats video the same as a website. In fact you can have a video of your business ranked high on search engines like Google even without having a website.

My cousin and his wife just left in their motorhome to travel around Ireland for three and a half weeks. He is a very good amateur photographer and I have arranged with him to let me have copies of the photos of the places and scenic views he takes, plus he is documenting his travels with his video camera.

When he returns I will edit the video and photos to give you their views on the locations they visits. I will add each location with video, photos and location details as daily blogs over a two week period.

Anyone wishing to visit Ireland with their campervan, caravan or motorhome in the near future will be able to have access to their itinery, down load it for reference and view the videos and photos.

Having returned from their tour of the Republic of Ireland I have listed on the map above the locations they visited.

The main reason is it is only one hour away from where we live in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. That meant that we could arrive on a Friday early evening and stay until Sunday evening giving us two whole days at the weekend to enjoy the parks, lakes and facilities at Billing.

Our daughter, son-in-law and two young grand children lived local to us and had also bought a secondhand Swift caravan just before us. We both spend many long weekends at Billing enjoying the open spaces and freedom it gave the grand children.

Although we did venture further on bank holiday weekends and we have travelled up to the Norfolk Broads and coast to campsites and caravan parks many times. We enjoyed touring with a caravan but decided to try a static caravan and wanting somewhere close we chose Billing Aquadrome to buy a new static caravan.

We felt it was far enough away to be a change of scenery and also was a large site with plenty to do for children and adults. Our static was located alongside one of the many waterways around Billing which allowed our family members to fish whenever they liked. There are mini markets, and other shops and restaurants located around the park. There is an amusement park near the park entrance and lakes for water sports. During the summer months various events are held in the park including classic car shows, steam engine rallys, Land Rover & 4 x4 displays etc.

Visiting friends that live too far to visit in one day normally means an over night stay either at your friends house or in a local hotel or guest house.

With friends in Lanark in Scotland who we have not visited for some time, we decided to visit them recently. Our five day visit was straight forward until our daughter and two grandchildren asked if they could come too. Not wanting to drive as a two car convoy, typical grandparent worriers, we decided to look into the hire of a Motor home for the visit. We also thought, it would be an adventure for the grandchildren.

On the internet I found a Motor home hire company , just outside Luton, which was not too far from us. The cost for a five day hire of a ‘Rambler’ 6 seater, was £425. with the optional insurance adding £75 making it £500. They were a very friendly and professional company and all their motor homes are no more than two years old.

We did not want to complete the six hour journey in one go, as we were going to leave on a Friday, after the grandchildren finished school. So we booked a campsite called the ‘Dirty Duck Caravan site’ at Woolsthorpe near Grantham which put us about two hours into our journey. This would mean getting there in the light and we could all explore the campsite in the evening as well as having something to eat.

We had decided to stay the Saturday and Sunday nights with our friends in Scotland and wanted to stay Monday/Tuesday in the ‘Lake District’ as we have never been there before. This would again break the six hour return journey so we booked a campsite called Waterfoot Park in Pooley Bridge near Penrith, which was two hours from our friends in Lanark.

I picked up the motor home early on the Friday, as offered by the Motorhome hire company, as they had all their 39 motor homes going out that day and they wanted to spread out the collections throughout the day. They give you an induction of the motor home which can last up to an hour. We did not need to take anything except bedding, cloths, food and yourselves. Everything else is provided.

Having driven small lorries and pulled a touring caravan in the past, driving the Motor home for the first time was not difficult. But for a novice, the first test comes when you leave their premises, as they are located on a farm just outside the village of Flamstead. The first few miles of driving is through narrow lanes to reach the main A5 road. I was rather glad I had taken out the additional insurance.

Once I had arrived back home I loaded up the Motor home with the bedding, clothes and food ready for everyone to arrive when school finished. The grandchildren were very excited and we managed to start our adventure by 5pm. At 7.30pm we had arrived at our first campsite the ‘Dirty Duck’. I was not expecting much because when we booked we were told the electric ‘hook-ups’ were in the pubs car park. It was only a stop over so we were not too bothered what it was like.

Wow, were we surprised. The Dirty Duck campsite was right out in the countryside. As we pulled up there was a good selection of swings, climbing frames etc which the grandchildren were eager to play on. The ‘Dirty Duck’ pub was alongside a pretty canal location. After we paid our £17 fee we drove into a small field where the electric ‘hook-ups’ were. The views from where we parked were across open countryside with a view of a Castle on a hill, in the far distance, a perfect setting. We were now ready for something to eat. The Dirty Duck was immaculate inside and had a good menu. The food we ordered from their menu was excellent. We remained in the Dirty Duck while the grandchildren played on the swings and climbing frames which we could see from the window. Also the weather was good.

A test of a good campsite is the toilet and shower facilities. The Dirty Duck did not disappoint. Although not large as they only had about 15 ‘hook-ups’ the toilets were basic but clean and usable. On the Saturday morning after a cup of tea and a bacon sandwich breakfast we were on our way to Scotland.

Our friends lived in a cottage on their family’s farm and had sufficient parking for our Motor home. When we finally arrived mid Saturday afternoon we parked next to their cottage and ‘hooked up’ to their electric supply with an adaptor connected to a mains socket in the cottage. The first night our grand children insisted we sleep with them in the Motor home which allowed our daughter to sleep in the cottages spare room which had a nice double bed. The things you do, for your grandchildren’s happiness. The second night they wanted Mummy to sleep with them which meant Nanny and Granddad had to sleep in the cottages spare rooms nice double bed. We didn’t need asking twice.

After two brief but lovely days in Scotland and two days of good weather we left our friends to journey down to the Lake District on Monday morning. Pooley Bridge near Penrith was where we had booked our Monday night stay and was only about two hours away. When we arrived we found Waterfoot Park a very pleasant campsite. After we parked up and hooked up to the electric we decided to explore the area. Pooley Bridge is a small village within a short walk of the campsite, and right on the edge of a very large lake. We and our grandchildren enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon around the lake and later found a lovely ‘café’ with excellent food, which we all enjoyed.

We didn’t pay our campsite fee until the early evening which was £22 for the night. In the morning we awoke to another good day, weather wise and found the toilet and shower facilities were excellent, when we used them. Although the Motor home has a chemical toilet and shower it is much easier to use campsite facilities when they are good and theirs were very good. After a leisurely morning we set off for our final leg of the journey home. We had intended to travel back down the M6/M1 but as we were on the junction of the A66 at Penrith we decided it would be nicer to travel back the way we came up via Scotch Corner back down on the A1.

We could not fault the whole adventure and our grand children thoroughly loved the experience. After we reached home by Tuesday afternoon we cleared the Motor home of all our belongings ready to return it to JustGo on the Wednesday morning. The conditions of return is that the chemical toilet is empty and cleaned, the fresh water container is refilled and the diesel and LPG gas bottle are refilled which was done at the local petrol station in Flamstead. The final cost of diesel for the whole trip was £160 and we used just £2 of LPG gas.

The whole trip cost just under £700 for three adults and two children for four nights and five days. This did not include any food or drinks as these were extra, but a very different way to spend a very long weekend break. I believe in value for money and we had exactly that. I would certainly recommend the motorhome hire company called www.Justgo.uk.com. I have travelled abroad regularly but not a great deal around the UK. The weather has a lot to do with holidays in the UK but when it’s good so are holidays in the UK.
